A new pitch estimation algorithm is proposed which is robust against various distortions on speech signals such as white noise and interference speech. The algorithm exploits the coincidence appearance of pitch information contained either in signal envelopes or in signal carriers. It is found that better estimation is obtained in the extremely noisy circumstances by combining these two pieces of information. The algorithm is based on the time directional analysis of wideband filtered signals, which is globally consistent with the auditory processing without mimicking its behavior.
