A performance analysis technique for spectral subtraction methods is introduced. From the outcome of the analysis it is, among other things, possible to rank different methods, tune the inherent design variables, derive novel methods with improved performance, and explain audible artifacts such as musical noise. In particular, it is argued that in the hands free mobile telephony scenario low-distortion spectral subtraction gives approximately lOdB noise level suppression.
