An ultrasonic method for monitoring tongue motion is presented. Employing pulsed-echo and pulsed-transmission techniques, this method can visualize lateral tongue shape and monitor the position of a specific point on the tongue surface. Measurement accuracy is investigated with respect to the distance between the transducer and the receiver, and with respect to the receiver's tilt angle. The method is applied to measure tongue motions during continuous speech.
