This paper details the project configuration and technical basis for ESPRIT project 2104 (POLYGLOT) which concerns automatic recognition of isolated words in a large vocabulary system and automatic text-to-speech synthesis for unrestricted text in a range of European languages: Dutch, English, French, German, Greek, Italian and Spanish. The paper reports technical progress in terms of advances in isolated word recognition and text-to-speech synthesis. Experimental results for isolated word recognition (Italian language) with 7,000 and 30,000 word vocabulary are presented. Work on continuous speech recognition within the project is described in terms of a feasibility study.
