If work carried out in the framework of acoustic-articulatory inversion is taken into consideration, the usefulness of having a fast and accurate method to compute both the formant frequencies and the Jacobian matrix of the articulatory-acoustic transformation immediately becomes evident. For this purpose, a variational formulation of the resonance modes in the vocal tract is presented. This formulation is able to handle a labial condition that fits the opened as well as the closed tract at the lips, and at the same time gives us analytical expressions for the sensitivity functions, from which the Jacobian matrix can be deduce.
