In the GOBL project we develop and test small web-based mini games for loweducated and disadvantaged beginning learners of Dutch, English, and French. An innovative aspect of this project is that we incorporate language and speech technology to practice speaking skills. The present paper explains the notion of mini games employed in the project and the advantages of their use with respect to the target group. We then present the first results of the project concerning pedagogical and user requirements, based on the literature and user-based research. We then introduce our plans for the immediate future.

Index Terms: serious gaming, speech and language technology, second language acquisition
