In this paper, we present a description of tonal configurations of prominence in French based on a multi-style corpus. This study is carried out within the typological framework developed in Aix depicting prominence on a functional basis. The phonetic correlates of the pre-defined accentual categories are investigated according to the dynamic properties of tonal variations, namely the slopes, timing and span of the 10 contours. This phonetic description is complemented by an attempt to predict membership of prominence for a particular accentual category using a regression model. This empirical investigation clearly validates the functional distinction of prominences on a tonal basis, although the inclusion of duration parameters seems necessary to improve the global predictions of the model.
