Comparing Two Methods of Developing a Rule System for Prosody

We compare two methods for developing a rule system for synthetic prosody: hand crafted rules and rules generated by automatic training using the regression tree approach. Measured numerically, the output of both systems and their performance in predicting is very similar. A perceptual study, however, reveals thai the hand-crafted rules yield a more acceptable synthetic prosody.
