The examination of marked intonation by means of synthesised speech signal provides a possibility to specify more precisely separate intonation features detected at first as potentially relevant in the sound complex of natural speech. Sets of Czech utterances systematically altered in F0-patterns are produced and the relevance of their differences for the native listener is then evaluated by listening tests. Accord- ing to our results, the number and size of steps in tone, their place in the higher text unit and the kind of sequence of falling and rising contours seem to be of the primary importance in the opposition of neutral vs. marked intonation in Czech.
