Perceptual Evidence for Accent Categories: Preliminaries and First Results

In German, a pitch accent is marked by an associated F0 maximum or movement. For a maximum-based parametrized description of pitch accents by four parameters, differences in the discriminative ability are investigated for each parameter. An optimal step size for each parameter was established for four versions of one sentence and successfully applied to other sentences. First results indicate marked differences in discriminative ability which depend on the utterance and the pertinent prosodic context.
